SEA LIFE Trust launches plan for Little Grey and Little White in Iceland

SEA LIFE Trust has introduced a new welfare-focused project on Facebook page of the organization, which is intended to prepare the meerkats Litla Grá and Litla Hvít for their return to Klettsvík on Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar Islands.

The plan is based on a carefully planned and gradual approach, with the welfare of the animals as the primary concern, as it is not possible to rush their transition to a permanent life in the bay. The process is therefore divided into manageable steps that adapt to the behavior, confidence and reactions of the beavers to their new environment.

As part of the program, Little Grey and Little White are encouraged to exhibit natural behavior and gradually become familiar with the sensory stimuli they will experience in the bay, including weather conditions and other natural stimuli. The goal is to strengthen both their physical and mental endurance.

The program is ongoing and allows each meerkat to develop at their own pace with long-term well-being as the guiding principle. With each step, their adaptability and self-confidence increase, preparing them for life in a natural coastal environment.

SEA LIFE Trust aims for Little Grey and Little White to be fully adapted to life in Klettsvík by 2026, marking the next stage in the development of the world's first open ocean sanctuary for porpoises.

The Mjaldrans first arrived in the country in June 2019 all the way from China and it has been difficult for them to adapt to life in Klettsvík. Therefore, they have mostly been kept in the institution's indoor pool.
