The whale museum in Húsavík is a popular stopover for tourists, and the operation of the museum has been successful with the growing activity in tourism in the Þingeyjar counties. The number of visitors in 2015 was around 26 thousand. The museum was founded in 1997 and its main goal is to share education and information about whales and their habitat. Through education and knowledge generation about whales and their habitat, the whale museum increases, among other things, the educational value of whale-watching trips made in Húsavík and elsewhere.
Tomorrow, Saturday 11 June, the new exhibition of Hvala School's students will open, as well as a harvest festival for the winter 2015/2016.
The students of Hvala School are encouraged to visit the museum and invite their friends and family, but the museum is free to enter from 12 when the official opening takes place and up to and including 16.
This year, the novelty was that the 5th graders read the story of Moby Dick in a lighter version, so their artwork is inspired by the story of the great white whale. You can find works of art such as drawings, XNUMXD works of the whaling ship Pequod and characters from the book, as well as a video work that will be shown alongside other works.
Coffee and snacks will be served later in the day.
