A 15-meter-long male minke whale washed up on the beach in Blikalón's land on the Melrakkaslättä. The whale was intact and apparently recently beached when it was spotted. Employees from the Whale Museum went and examined the creature together with Jón Tryggva Árnason from Blikalón. A sample was taken for the Norwegian Marine Research Institute and a decision was made as to what would be best to do with the whaler. Due to the size of the whale and the local conditions, only parts of the creature will be used. The Whale Museum has a cage of a sperm whale on display, but that whale washed ashore in Steingrímsfjörður in 1998.
