Over the past few years, plovers have made themselves at home in search of food at Skjálfand in late winter and spring. The best time to see gray whales at Skjálfand has been in May and June, but after that they swim out of Skjálfand. Those who go whale watching from Húsavík in the spring and early summer are in the unique position of being able to possibly see a live orca up close at Skjálfand and then go to the Whale Museum afterwards and see what the skeleton of this largest mammal in the world looks like. Húsavík is therefore a kind of hometown of the foundry in this respect.
In the last few days, a wreck has been seen on Skjálfand. Today, for example, visitors on the whale watching boat Norðursailingar saw a whale shark in the middle of Skjálfand. Funnily enough, we can mention that gray whales were seen almost on the same day in March last year.
