The whale museum in Húsavík held a festive opening last December 27 and 28, but those were the only working days between Christmas and New Year. Entry to the museum was free and the museum staff had done many things to make the atmosphere as Christmassy as possible. This is how Christmas music sounded from the museum's birdcage, the rockery exhibition was lit up in red colors, and visitors could enjoy gingerbread, confetti and other goodies.
Suffice it to say that the trick was a huge success and 200 visitors came to the museum over the two days. There were many local people who had not visited the museum before and it was very pleasing to hear how much they liked the exhibits. It can be assumed that the festival opening will be held annually, but the Whale Museum staff is not aware that such an opening has been available before.
