This morning, March 1, the whale watching season began in Húsavík. It was Gentle Giants and Norðursigling who rode to the ford on their oak boats Sylvíu and Náttfar. The trips were well attended and the sea conditions were the most reasonable considering the time of year.
This is the 25th year in a row that organized whale watching trips are available from Húsavík. The first year very few people came, but as the world knows, the industry has grown enormously and at most 110 people have come whale watching in the same season.
On the occasion of this turning point, Eva Björk Káradóttir, director of the Whale Museum in Húsavík, presented the representatives of the companies with a bouquet of flowers and a watercolor painting of a humpback by the Spanish artist Rena Ortega. The whale museum has always been in good cooperation with the whale watching companies. Among other things, whale watching visitors get a 20% discount on admission to the museum. Many people take advantage of these terms, and the interests of the Whale Museum in good cooperation with the whale watching companies are therefore undisputed. It can be assumed that 2/3 of the total visitors to the museum during the year are coming from whale watching in Skjálfandaflói.
