The Minister of Education and Culture, Illugi Gunnarsson, has, on the recommendation of the Museum Council agreed to grant recognition to the Whale Museum in Húsavík. Accredited museums must operate in accordance with the provisions of the Museums Act, and the Swedish Museums Council is responsible for supervising museum activities in the country.
This recognition is very important to the Whale Museum and a certain quality certification of the museum's work. About the recognition, the Council of Museums says that "the aim of the recognition is to strengthen the activities of museums in the preservation of Iceland's cultural and natural heritage, to ensure that it is returned intact to future generations, to give people access to it and to promote increased knowledge of this heritage and understanding of its connections with the rest of the world".
