Saga
The operation of the Whale Museum, formerly known as the Whale Center, began in 1997 as an experiment with a small exhibition about whales. Only three years after its establishment, the exhibition had become very popular and the number of visitors exceeded the wildest expectations. The museum had proven its right to exist and it was necessary for it to get its own premises suitable for its activities. The old slaughter house of Kaupfélag Þingeyinga was chosen and is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the North. The founder of the museum and its director for the first 11 years was Ásbjörn Björgvinsson.
