The Húsavík Whale Museum participated in International Museum Day on May 18th by offering free guided tours of the museum in four languages. The day was a great success and it was pleasing to see how many people made their way to the museum, including many locals of foreign origin. See the photo gallery at the bottom of the news.
The guided tours gave visitors the opportunity to get to know the museum better, learn about whales, the ocean and the importance of whale research, as well as experience the museum in their own language or a language they are familiar with. With this initiative, the Whale Museum wanted to contribute to making the museum more accessible to the diverse community of Húsavík and the surrounding area.
Maria Glarou, a doctoral student at the University of Iceland in the field of life and environmental sciences, with an emphasis on whales, marine biology and related research fields, undertook a guided tour in Greek, as the number of Greeks has been rapidly increasing in Húsavík in recent years.
Employees of the Whale Museum, Maria Domasik og Garðar Thröstur Einarsson provided guidance in Polish on the one hand and English and Icelandic on the other.
The Whale Museum would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who came to the museum on the occasion of the day and participated in the guided tours. It was especially gratifying to see people from different groups in society come together, learn about whales and share their experiences at the museum.
International Museum Day reminds us of the important role of museums as a platform for education, culture, conversation and connections between people. The Húsavík Whale Museum looks forward to continuing to welcome visitors, share knowledge about whales and the ocean, and create a space where everyone is welcome.
